 Manuel Barrueco
September 28, 2001

Firmly established as a leading figure in the guitar world today, Manuel Barrueco is a "major artist with remarkable musicianship and a world of technique... simply and consistently awesome." ( Los Angeles Times ) Ever since his dazzling debut recital at Carnegie Hallin 1974, he has been recognized as a superb musician who possesses a seductive sound and uncommon lyrical gifts. Cuban born Barrueco has performed under such conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Franz Welser Most and David Zinman; this year he will perform with the Berkeley Symphony, the Helsink Symphony and the Barcelona Symphony. He had the honor of performing the Concerto de Aranuez in Joaquin Rodrigo's native Valencia in a memorial concert at the event of the composer's recent death, and his recording of that concerto was called the "best recording" of that piece in Classic CD Magazine.

Read a review of Barrueco's master class in Seattle on the main page here. His website is of great interest.

 Roland Dyens
November 3, 2001

Improviser, composer, and virtuoso performer, Roland Dyens represents a new class of musician whose technical facility on the guitar establishes a new standard for the instrument. His compositions are so diverse as to defy categorization, combining classical, jazz, steel string, rock and funk elements into a unified and inclusive whole. His unique talent, breathtaking diversity and virtuosity earns him a special place among the most innovative and complete musicians of his generation. Dyens, who studied with the Spanish master Alberto Ponce, also pursued conducting, composition and orchestration, and received a first prize for his studies in harmony, counterpoint and analysis. An international prize-winner and laureate of the Menuhin Foundation, he has been classed among the 100 best contemporary guitarists of all styles by Guitarist magazine.

 Los Angeles Guitar Quartet
February 9, 2002

"Listen and marvel," says Guitar Player. "If you haven't heard a classical guitar quartet before, this one won't just show you what you've been missing--they'll blow you away! A premier instrumental ensemble, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is one of the most charismatic and versatile groups performing today. "For the first time in the brief history of the guitar quartet, there is an ensemble which can compete with the great string quartets! (Munich Tageszeitung) The LAGQ has appeared in prestigious music series at LA's Royce Auditorium, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and New York's Lincoln Center and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Touring regularly to Asia and throughout Europe, LAGQ has been featured on the Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore and Istanbul International Arts Festivals. LAGQ has been heard on such popular national radio programs as Performance Today, St. Paul Sunday Morning, and World Cafe.

Visit the LAGQ and hear some samples from their prolific set of CDs at www.lagq.com. For those who have not seen the LAGQ, a review by Jim Tosone will be useful.

David Russell
April 27, 2002

For our final 2001-2002 Series concert, SCGS is delighted to welcome Seattle favorite and pre-eminent virtuoso David Russell--"a talent of extraordinary dimension." (The New York Times) Russell is world-renowned for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry, having earned the highest praise from audience and critics alike. He has twice won the Julian Bream Guitar Prize and numerous international competitions including the Andres Segovia Competition, the Jose Ramirez Competition and Spain's prestigious Francisco Tarrega Competition. Composers Jorge Morel, Francis Kleynjans, Carlo Domeniconi and Sergio Assad, among others, have dedicated works to him. In 1997, he was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Guitar Times' website, guitartimes.com/biodr.html, has an unusual amount of material of interest: bio, discography, and an online master class: 'when you do the G after the F, cry a little bit. Make sure you cry on the second F also'. There are some wonderful audio samples of David's CDs linked through Amazon at this site.

Another bit of good reading is a conversation between David and Manuel Barrueco, from the latter's website.
