Jorge Caballero (Saturday, September 24, 2005)

Jorge Caballero is regarded by many in the music world as one of the finest guitaristic talents to have emerged during the past decade. A native of Lima, Peru, Caballero began his musical studies with Oscar Zamora at the National Conservatory in Lima. As a young student, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including First Prize at the Peruvian Conservatory Competition, and First Prize at the First Latin American Guitar Competition. This prize included a major tour, with concerto performances for the 16 year-old Caballero in Mexico City, Washington DC and Spain, as well as throughout South America. At the age of 19, Mr. Caballero became the first guitarist to win the Naumburg International Competition in New York City. The New York Times praised Caballero’s “illuminating clarity and touching gracefulness” in his debut recital in 1997, acknowledging “his unusual combination of a deft, powerful technique and a soft-spoken interpretive persona.” At a second recital sponsored by the Naumburg Foundation, The Times noted, “Mr. Caballero has grown as an interpreter, and he showed that he was not afraid to take chances.”

His March program will include some of his own pieces, as well as works by Bach, Albeniz, Rodrigo, and Piazzolla. His new CD Shard was released in May 2005. The recording features new music for guitar including his own Guitar Concerto performed with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Anthony Spain. "The Seattle Classic Guitar Society's series of recitals at Benaroya Hall is one of the great, relatively undiscovered delights of Seattle's classical-music season. The performers are top-notch, and the venue, Benaroya's Nordstrom Recital Hall, has acoustics that are matched perfectly to the intimate demands of the guitar." The Seattle Times, November 2000
