October 2003: SCGS Outreach Events Continue

The Seattle Classical Guitar Society is proud to announce the continuation of their outreach programs with a series of lecture/recitals conducted by local professionals Michael Partington, Michael LeFèvre and Elizabeth Brown.  These events are designed to bring classical guitar music to a wider listening public and to educate audience members through discussions of the historical background of the music and the instrument.  Questions are encouraged and desired! Each lecture/recital will be approximately 45 minutes to an hour long and the informal nature of these events makes it an ideal opportunity for families and friends to experience classical music without the trappings of the concert hall.  Because admission is always FREE, bring along any and all who might show an interest in expanding their musical horizons.

Beginning in September, one branch of the SCGS Outreach will include presentations in churches throughout Seattle by Michael LeFèvre, including Ballard, Lake Forest Park, Greenlake, West Seattle and Medina, all of which are free and open to the public. Michael Partington will also be making appearances at schools in the Seattle, Issaquah, Mercer Island and Shoreline districts, and even as far as the Olympic Peninsular. Watch this space or contact either Michael at the Rosewood Guitar, 206-297-8788, for specific details of events.

Elizabeth Brown’s outreach program will focus on Music of Latin America.  These performances will feature works by de Murcia, Barrios, Ponce, Villa-Lobos, Brouwer and Lauro performed on baroque, 19th century and modern guitars.  She will perform at various schools, for the El Centro de la Raza senior program, at the Northgate Elder Health (October 6) and for the Kirkland Senior Center’s Latino program (October 22).  Performances open to the public include:  Queen Anne Christian Church (September 28), Evergreen Mennonite Church at the Northwest Arts Center in Bellevue (October 12) and Olympic View Community Church in Northgate (October 26).  Please watch this space for additional events.

Also, if you know of, or are involved with, a school, church or other organization that would benefit from or might be interested in participating in the outreach program please get in touch and forward us the information.

The sponsorship of these events is by the SCGS thanks to the generous support of an anonymous private foundation and through other private donations. This is just another thing that makes this area such a great place in which to live.  By promoting the arts in schools, churches, community centers, and on the concert stage, the SCGS and its supporters are doing their part to cultivate an informed and enriched populace.
