Message from the Executive Director

At several recent Seattle Classic guitar Society Board meetings, members have expressed a desire to increase the social component of the SCGS’s functions. It seems likely that at least some of our members would like to be able to get together on a regular basis to chat, play for each other and share common interests in the classical guitar. We welcome any ideas for how the SCGS can bring more society to the Seattle Classic Guitar Society, and especially welcome volunteers who are willing to organize such events.

The SCGS has attempted to address the desire for more social activities in the past and continues to sponsor a number of events that have at least the potential for a social component. The now-defunct Bitters Cafe Concert Series was envisioned as a more relaxed setting for performances and member socializing. With the occasional distraction of the espresso machine in the background, members found the casual Bitters environment a wonderful way to listen to sometimes serious and sometimes not so serious music. With a change in ownership at Bitters this series was dropped and replaced with the Frye Concert Series. While the setting at the Frye is a bit more formal, the museum still provides a setting where people can meet and socialize before and after the concerts. Many members who have attended our master classes will also note that these events provide a great setting for meeting other SCGS members and discussing the latest burning issues in the classical guitar world. What a better stimulant to conversation that to be present while the likes of David Russell or Paul Galbraith gives a public lesson to a talented master class performer?

Finally, the SCGS Christmas Concerts and summer picnic (Sunday 8th August!) are both organized to be member events with a big emphasis on member participation and socializing. The summer picnic will be held this year on Suday, August 8 at long-time member Dick Sacksteder’s house. Bring some food, bring your guitar and join us in celebrating this wonderful community of people passionate about the classical guitar.
