The Frye Art Museum is committed to providing the greater Seattle community with free access to art; the Seattle Classic Guitar Society is committed to supporting the art of the classical guitar in the same region. Together, they present the Sunday Series at the Frye, a series of free classical guitar concerts in the Museum's auditorium.
The 2003-2004 Sunday Series opened on September 14 with an outstanding
performance by Michael LeFevre. His warm tone and rich musicality shone
throughout his program. The performance opened with two works by the
English Renaissance composer John Dowland, played in a stately and assured
fashion. LeFevre then moved on to the Sonata in C by Mauro Giuliani,
which he performed with an appropiate balance of lyricism and technical
flare. Clearly an audience favorite, the Fandanguillo by Turina that
followed served to show the dramatic capabilities of the guitar This was
followed by a somewhat heavier work, All in Twilight by the 20th
Century
Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. This is clearly a piece that LeFevre
knows well, and he presented it with great care to an appreciative
audience. The program closed with the second Lute Site by the master
composer J.S. Back, a fitting close to an excellently performed program.
